Wire-O binding: twin wire loops

Unlike a single coil, two independent wires share the load here, each one closing through its own hole and locking into a round loop.

That paired construction is still loose enough to let pages rotate freely around it, so the book can fold flat and keep going until front and back covers meet.

A closing seam sits at one edge of the spine, tucked inside the back cover rather than left exposed the way a coil's cut end is.

Hole shape varies by manufacturer die: square, round and rectangular punches are all in use, so the exact hole outline shown here is representative, not universal.

Mybinding's guide separately notes that pages 'turn smoothly' in addition to lying completely flat once the book is open.

James Burn describes itself on its own site as inventor of the 'Original Wire-O double loop binding system,' offering 2:1 pitch sizes from 5/8 inch to 1 inch and 3:1 pitch sizes from 1/4 inch to 9/16 inch; 'Wire-O' is used here only nominatively, alongside the generic term double-loop wire.

Walsworth's guide states a recommended maximum of 200 pages for Wire-O binding, a practical ceiling on how thick a double-loop wire book can get.

The same mybinding guide ties the two pitches to book size directly: 2:1 spacing for larger books, 3:1 for smaller ones.

Why do some double-loop wire books have square holes and others round?

It comes down to the punching die each bindery uses. Square, round and rectangular hole shapes all show up in commercial double-loop wire binding, and none of them changes how the wire itself closes or rotates. Whichever die punched the holes, the same pair of C-shaped loops closes through each one and squeezes round, so the pages turn and the book lies flat exactly the same way regardless of hole shape.

What is the Canadian variant of Wire-O binding?

Walsworth's guide describes it as a cover treatment rather than a different wire mechanism: concealed Wire-O binding uses a hard or soft cover that continues around the binding to hide the wire, so the same paired loops still hold the pages, just out of sight behind the cover material instead of exposed along the edge.

Does Wire-O binding lay flat?

Yes. The paired wire loops let every page rotate freely around the spine, so there's nothing stopping the book from lying flat once it's open, and the two covers can keep rotating right on around the loops until they land against each other. Can you add or remove pages after Wire-O binding?

No. The paired wire loops are squeezed round through the punched holes during binding, and that same squeezed closure is what keeps them from being pried open again by hand afterward. That's different from screw-post binding, where the posts unscrew, or comb binding, where the molded tines pry open by hand: once the paired loops here are squeezed shut, there's no equivalent unscrewing or unclipping step to reverse it.

Is Wire-O the same as twin-loop or double-loop wire?

Yes. Wire-O is James Burn's trademark name for what the trade calls double-loop or twin-loop wire, a generic mechanism any manufacturer can build.
