Spiral binding, also called coil binding, threads one continuous plastic or metal coil through a row of punched holes along the edge of loose, unfolded pages, then cuts and crimps both ends so the coil can't work its way back out.

Coil pitch (how closely the loops are spaced) varies by manufacturer; mybinding's own guide recommends oval holes for 'a professional finish' and easier threading over what it calls 'traditional round holes,' though round-holed coil binding is common too.

Once the ends are cut and crimped, the coil is meant to stay closed, so pages generally aren't added or removed after binding without unwinding it.
