What Binding Unfolded is

Binding Unfolded compares eleven book-binding structures, from the glued spine of a paperback to the coil of a spiral notebook and the exposed chain stitch of a Coptic book. Each method gets one page with an original side-on diagram that you can open and close, the anatomy of the structure, a table of what it can and cannot do, the bindings it is most often confused with, and the references behind every claim. The home page puts all eleven on one scale so two can be compared side by side.

The site does three things on purpose and leaves three things out. It shows how a structure is built, how it moves when the book opens, and how to recognize it on a shelf. It does not give tutorials, does not recommend printers or suppliers, and does not carry affiliate links.

Who makes it

Binding Unfolded is written, drawn and maintained by one person, working independently, and it publishes under its own name rather than a personal one. I am not a professional bookbinder and have no connection to any bindery, printer or supplier named on these pages. What stands in for a credential is the method: every factual claim traces to a source I fetched and read, every diagram comes from one shared geometry model, and every page shows the date it was last checked. The Methodology page explains that process in full, including the two-source rule and what the diagrams do and do not show.

Why it exists

Most explanations of binding are written to sell a binding service, and most photographs show a closed book. Neither answers the practical question a reader, a self-publisher or a student actually has: will this lie flat on the desk, will the pages fold back, can I add a page later? Drawing the structures side by side, at the same scale, in motion, answers that question faster than prose can, and the sourced text around each diagram says where the answer comes from.

If a diagram or a sentence here disagrees with a source you trust, I want to know. The contact page has the address; every accepted correction is applied and recorded in the review date of the page it affects.
